NUAL PH CE Research Symposium held at FEU-Tech

NUAL PH CE Research Symposium
By Dr. Nolan Concha

With the view of disseminating the latest research findings in Civil Engineering, the Nagoya University Alumni Association-Philippine Branch (NUAL-Ph) spearheaded the CE symposium last May 31, 2019 held at the AVR of FEU- Institute of Technology, Manila. The symposium was held as the 4th in a lecture series spearheaded by NU alumni here in the Philippines as part of its branch mission to organize and have its members do their societal contribution in promoting information exchange and in sharing their expertise to various stakeholders.

The CE symposium was co-organized with FEU tech and DLSU where three Philippine professors presented their research findings in various areas of civil engineering specifically on  rebar corrosion, liquefaction and CFRP.  The program commenced with a welcome remarks by FEU Tech Director, Dr. Manuel Belino followed by the opening remarks of Dr. Cynthia Saloma, president of NUAL-PH. Two distinguished professors from the Civil Engineering department of Nagoya University (NU) also graced the event. Prof. Hikaru Nakamura delivered a presentation about the programs and opportunities at NU. On the other hand, Prof. Yoshihito Yamamoto, talked on the use of rigid body spring model (RBSM) and deep learning of non-destructive method as well as the highlights of various on-going research activities at the concrete lab of NU. The research topics presented in the symposium by DLSU and FEU-Tech faculty were as follows: “Application of Optical Flow in Monitoring the Development of Liquefaction in a Cyclic Triaxial Test” by Dr. Erica Elice Uy of DLSU and Nagoya U PhD sandwich program student, “Investigation of the Effects of Corrosion on Bond Strength of Steel in Concrete” by Dr. Nolan Concha of FEU-Tech, and “Theory and Modeling of Partial CFRP Confined Concrete” by Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza Jr. of DLSU and a Nagoya U PhD CE alumnus 2018.

The program was concluded by Prof Nakamura motivating the student participants to pursue advanced studies in the future.  He invited the students to apply to Japanese universities more particularly to Nagoya University. More than 100 students and faculty members from FEU tech and DLSU attended the symposium.
