AGRI: Getting Smarter under FIRe!

NUAL Philippines is conducting Getting Smarter Under FIRE: A Webinar on Agriculture in the Age of Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRE) on December 11, 2020, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. The virtual webinar is being hosted by PhilRice with the support of  UP Los Banos. The highlights of the webinar is as follows:

Saloma of UPD and National Genome Center will open the conference while NUAL Philippines founding president, Dr. Roel Suralta, NU alumnus and scientist at PhilRice will deliver his closing remarks. The organizing committee of the virtual webinar is headed by Dr. Rodmyr Datoon (NUAL Philippines Auditor) and asst. professor at UPLB in coordination with  Dr. Roel Suralta of PhilRice. Members of the committee include Dr. Marcos Valdez, in charge of the proceedings and invitation and Dr. Ron Vilog as secretary, emcee and moderator (AM session). Dr. Neil Tan Gana (NUAL PH  Asst. Treasurer), on the other hand  will be the moderator of the PM session.

MEIDAI Alumni - Cynthia Saloma & Roel Suralta honored by DOST

Nagoya University alumni, Dr. Cynthia Saloma of UP Philippine Genome Center and current President of the Nagoya University Alumni Association - Philippines and and Dr. Roel Suralta of the Philippine Rice Research Institute were honored in the first virtual National Science and Technology Week Science & Technology Awards hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST Philippines) on November 23, 2020.


Dr. Saloma, received the Dioscoro L. Umali Medal, "for her contributions as Executive Director of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) of the University of the Philippines (UP) System and for her proactive management approach and extensive experience, coupled with her unwavering mentorship of young scientists, has paved the way for the creation of PGC’s Satellite Facilities in UP Visayas and UP Mindanao as well as the generation of many research grants and projects, which capitalized on building the capacity and capability of researchers to undertake genomics research in health, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, forensics, and ethnicity."



Dr. Suralta and his team received the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal, for their outstanding scientific research on “Quantitative Trait Loci Associated with Root Elongation Ability of Rice under Nitrogen-deficient Condition. Their research identified putative quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with root elongation, which can be used for further validation and/or development of marker systems useful in breeding cultivars with improved adaptation to rice-growing environments with limited Nitrogen (N)."

 Dr. Suralta's team includes co-researchers: Jennifer M. Manangkil, Jonathan M. Niones, Jerwin R. Undan, Mitsuhiro Obara, Teodora E. Mananghaya, Rachelle P. Mallari, Maybell DM. Banting, Sherilyn B. Estrada, and Mark Philip B. Castillo

NUAL-PH co-organizes ERDI Conference for CAR



DOST-CAR and Cordillera Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research & Development Consortium (CIEERDeC) in cooperation with Nagoya University Alumni Association Philippine Branch (NUAL-PH) present the Engineering Research, Development & Innovations (ERDI) Conference: A Presentation of Engineering Researches Relevant in the Cordillera Region on FEBRUARY 27 & 28, 2020 at Ridgewood Hotel, Juan Felipe Street, Baguio City. The conference organization is chaired by Dr.. Nancy Bantog, Regional Director for DOST-CAR and a PhD alumnus of Nagoya University Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Andy Oreta, DLSU Professor and D.Eng. alumnus of Nagoya University Civil Engineering. The NUAL-PH is led by the president, Dr. Cynthia Saloma of UP PGC. The resource speakers are mostly alumni of Nagoya University.
